Federal Government Infrastructure Investments in Alberta

The Alberta Government is committed to improving the lives of Albertans by making significant investments in public infrastructure projects that meet the need of citizens today and for generations to come.

The Budget 2017 Capital Plan will continue on the major infrastructure investments that started with Budget 2016. Federal government investments in Alberta’s infrastructure are being used to leverage funding committed to projects in Capital Plan 2017. This allows the provincial government to offset borrowing costs for these capital projects.

The federal government’s 2017 budget announced new infrastructure commitments for Canada’s Long Term Infrastructure Plan (Phase 2) of over $81 billion (nationally) over 11 years. Further information on the provincial/territorial allocations are expected from the federal government.

Canada’s Long Term Infrastructure Plan (Phase 1) was unveiled in the 2016 federal budget and committed $11.9 billion (nationally) over five years to public transit, green and social infrastructure programs. The plan allocates $593.9 million to Alberta for public transit and clean water/waste water systems.

The National Infrastructure Component and the Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component make up the New Building Canada Fund (2014 – 2024). The Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component is divided between the Small Communities Fund and the National and Regional Projects
