Project Summary

The Need

For more than 20 years, the need for a new courthouse in Calgary to meet the growing needs of the area has been studied.

Calgary's Court of Appeal, the Court of Queen's Bench and the four divisions of the Provincial Court are located in five separate facilities. Apart from the confusion caused by navigating five separate facilities, all courts are near or over capacity and there is continued pressure to expand due to population and business growth.

Investment in Justice

Investing in new facilities for the justice system is an investment in the continued safety and security of our communities.

Our investment provides:

  • Improved public accessibility to court and associated legal services
  • Critical expansion space to address current and future needs
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies for security, information systems and communications
  • Better integration of court services and more efficient use and sharing of resources such as space, equipment and staff, prisoner security and public safety

Project Features

The west block development project between 6th and 7th Avenue and between 5th and 6th Street SW will consist of two atrium linked towers with a 24-floor north tower and a 20-floor south tower encompassing 73 courtrooms, as well as an underground parkade for 220 vehicles.

Approximately 600 people will be moving into the new courthouse, including 75 justices and judges, over 180 Security personnel and approximately 360 Government, Library and external agencies staff people.

Future East Block Development

The Calgary Courts Centre has been designed and will be built with future growth in mind, allowing for ease of expansion to accommodate this bustling city and province.

Future site development includes the demolition of the Court of Queen's Bench facility, a 700-stall underground public parkade and an urban park. The existing diagonal walkway that crosses the site from 6th to 7th Avenue will be part of the public space amidst a vibrant landscape of trees, plants, benches, stone blocks and a cascading waterfall.

Public Private Partnerships

The Government of Alberta will fund the $300 million project while a private group of companies including GWL Realty Advisors Inc., CANA Management Ltd., Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning and SNC-Lavalin ProFac Inc. will design build and operate the courts facility as a public private partnership.
